What is the Difference Between Home Health and Home Care?

When an aging loved one is in need of care, it can be confusing to navigate the options. Do they need home health? Do they need home care? What is the difference between the two?

Fortunately today, we’re here to offer some support and help you determine what service you need.

Home Care is a nonmedical service. This is reserved for individuals who need assistance performing daily activities like bathing, driving, laundry, meal preparation and more. While it can certainly benefit those who may be recovering from a recent surgical procedure and have limited mobility, home care professionals are generally not able to administer medications or change dressings. When it comes to the cost of home care, most of the time, home care services are paid for privately, however many long term care insurance policies and VA insurance programs will reimburse for a portion of the expenses if not all.

Home health provides medical care in the home setting. These services can range from in-home nursing to therapy. Caregivers in home health can administer intravenous medications, treat wounds, help manage diabetes through glucose monitoring and insulin administration, assist with Alzheimer’s and dementia-related illnesses, provide occupational therapy, and much more. Most insurance programs will fully cover the cost of home health services with us if referred by a physician.
